Born and raised in Gloucestershire, Jack Smith began his banding career as a member of the [bands/chalford-band|Chalford Band], where he started out on bass trombone and euphonium. In 2002 Jack was awarded a scholarship to Trinity College of Music, where he studied trombone with Roger Harvey and piano with Raymond Banning, and won the college conducting prize before graduating with first class honours in 2007. He then went on to specialise in conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (studying with David Jones and Adrian Partington), becoming the first student of the conducting course there to earn a degree as Master of Music.

An exceptionally versatile musician, Jack has a wealth of experience to draw upon. As a conductor, instrumentalist and chorister, he has performed in a wide range of styles from music of the Renaissance up to the present day, including jazz and contemporary music. He also works extensively as an arranger and adjudicator.

Jack’s career as a bandsman has been equally diverse. He has played in bands from almost every section, and on all trombone, baritone and euphonium seats at various levels. He was solo trombone with the [bands/bands/newbridge-celynen-band|Newbridge (Celynen) Band] during their rise to the Championship Section, and he has been in demand at various times as a guest player with a number of high-ranking bands, including [bands/flowers-band|Flowers], [bands/redbridge-brass|Redbridge] and [bands/tredegar-town-band|Tredegar].

Since 2008, Jack has enjoyed a range of conducting engagements with bands from all sections across the country. His first permanent appointment was as Music Director to [bands/forest-of-dean-brass|Forest of Dean Brass] (2009-10), a short but successful tenure brought to a premature end by Jack's return to London. From 2010 to 2014, Jack spent four happy years with [bands/east-london-brass|East London Brass] as a roving member of their trombone section, and remaining busy as a deputy with many bands in the area on all trombone, euphonium and baritone seats.

During the same period, Jack was appointed as Music Director to [bands/epsom-and-ewell-band|Epsom & Ewell Silver Band]. Under his direction, the band achieved several best-ever contest results, most notably at the 2013 National Championships (Section 2) and 2015 Regional Championships (Section 1).

Jack's relocation to Huddersfield in 2015 sadly brought his time with EESB & ELB to a close, but at the same time opened up exciting new opportunities in and around West Yorkshire. Soon in demand in the area as a guest conductor, Jack has been fortunate to work with a number of famous and historic bands across Yorkshire and the wider region in subsequent years.

Since 2015 Jack has enjoyed various spells as resident conductor to [bands/thoresby-colliery|Thoresby Colliery Band], guest conductor with [bands/meltham-and-meltham-mills-band|Meltham & Meltham Mills Band], and as MD for the [bands/kippax-band|Kippax Band], before being appointed as conductor to [bands/skipton-brass|Skipton Brass] in 2017. At the same time Jack enjoyed a successful tenure at [bands/horbury-victoria-band/Horboury Victoria Band] as solo trombone and deputy conductor, and deputised on trombone with famous names such as [bands/marsden-silver-prize-band|Marsden], [bands/yorkshire-imperial-david-urquart-travel-band|Yorkshire Imperial] and the up-and-coming [bands/city-of-bradford-brass|City of Bradford].

During Jack's time at Skipton, the band returned to a full strength of players (plus supernumerary cornets, trombones and basses), won prizes at the Ripon Entertainment Contest in consecutive years, and developed its concert programming and community profile both locally and online. Jack resigned as conductor to Skipton Brass in November 2022, owing to having had to take on a "proper job" (in NHS Administration for Mental Health) in 2021.

Jack has been co-principal trombone of the [bands/shepherd-group-band|Shepherd Group Band] since summer 2018, sharing stages with the legendary [bands/cory-band|Cory], [bands/black-dyke-band|Black Dyke] and [bands/brighouse-and-rastrick-band|Brighouse & Rastrick] bands along the way, playing quintets for the equally iconic Frank Matheson, and subsequently graduating to play Timpani (with SGBB) for the 2023 Regional Championships.

In November 2022 Jack was appointed as Conductor to [bands/uppermill-band|Uppermill Band].

Whilst music clearly plays a huge part in his life, Jack also enjoys quieter and more sensible pursuits when he has time, such as cooking, reading & writing, hill-walking, cycling and phone-dropping.
