The contest was promoted by a Mr.J.E.Fulton.
The advertisement for the contest appeared in the Daily Telegraph on the 27th September for the contest to be held over several days commencing on Saturday 2nd October ,then Monday concluding on the 23rd
The competition entailed the performances of three Own Choice works over the three evenings
The first two evenings were held on the lawns of the Exhibition Building ,but the final night was held at the Theatre Royal owing to bad weather

Upon the decision of the adjudicators been made ,there was a disturbance in the upper section of the house and Mr. Thompson , bandmaster of the Headquarters Band declined to accept the second prize , and issued a challenge to the victors (Naval Brigade) to play for either 50 or 100 pound a side
