Longton and Dresden were the only two to play after the quickstep contest. The other bands objected to professionals in the Longton band (from Boarshurst and Black Dyke), who were not disqualified, and therefore they refused to take the stand. As they left the market not a few of the disappointed players sent through their instruments "a flatter flat than usual, a very piercing sharp, and a few naturals, whose tone spoke vexation as loudly as any words"
