West Lothian (Council Area), Scotland, UK

Historic West Lothian (known until 1924 as Linlithgowshire), although it gave rise to the modern-day council area of West Lothian, also included territory now in the City of Edinburgh and Falkirk council areas and did not include territory now in the council area but then in Midlothian.

On 16th May 1975 the three Lothians were combined into the single region of Lothian, which was split apart again on 1st April 1996, into the modern-day council areas of West Lothian, Midlothian, East Lothian, and City of Edinburgh.
