Oxfordshire & District BBA Contests

Contest Group Notes

The Oxfordshire & District Brass Band Assocation (ODBBA) was founded in 1923 for the specific purpose of running this contest. In the first year, three sections were run, differentiated by musical type - selection, march, waltz. In the second year, three sections were run, differentiated by band grading, a model followed thereafter. The contest ran continuously until the 1933 event, after which decreasing entries prompted a hiatus until 1936, when it was revived as a contest for "Junior Grade" bands. Following the 1939 event, World War Two prevented further runnings until 1946. 1949 was again cancelled due to low entries, and no contests took place in 1951, 1952, or 1953. In 1954 it was revived and held in Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, where it stayed until the final event in this series, in 1957. In 1958 it was replaced by the Gloucestershire vs. Oxfordshire Contest, but this proved to be a one-off, and ODBBA contesting lapsed for a number of years thereafter.

In 1967, the ODBBA Entertainment Contest was instituted, and in 1975 the ODBBA Winter Contest, which follows a similar format to the 1950s contests in this series.
