Greenfields Horticultural Society Exhibition
A temporary stand, which had been erected, collapsed as the Silverdale Band had commenced to play. The members fell in a heap mixed up with their instrument, music stands and fallen timber. Most of the men were able to extricate themselves with little injury, but one man, the solo trombone player, Frank Washington, an engine driver, was insensible when released, and died in the infirmary half-an-hour afterwards.
