Ted was born and raised in Yorkshire and followed the family tradition of joining Meltham and Meltham Mills Band on trombone .
After leaving school he joined the Scots Guards Band and for several years was principal trombone .
Upon leaving the Guards he relocated to Yorkshire and took up a peripatetic teaching post around Huddersfield and was very much a part of the successful Holmfirth High School Band along with Alan Simmons .
He later accepted a similar job with Dewsbury Schools and was the conductor of their band until retirement .
