Jan De Maeseneer 2020-

Brassband Zuid-Limburg

Jan De Maeseneer, born on October 2, 1986 in Vilvoorde, blew his first notes at the age of 6 in the youth studio of Brassband Hombeek. Starting on the cornet, he was taught by Luc van Humbeeck and Michel Leveugle. Later Jan exchanged his cornet for the euphonium. He was taught in this by various teachers, including Ben van Lombeeck, Luc Vertommen, Ben Haemhouts and André van Driesschen. In 2000 he won the Brass Band Federation competition in the category up to 14 years. At the age of 17, Jan decided to study at the Kunsthumaniora in Antwerp, where he was taught by Bart van Neyghem, solo tubist at the large harmony orchestra of the Gidsen.
In 2005 Jan switched to the tuba. He graduated from the Kunsthumaniora in 2006 and started his higher musical studies at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Antwerp that same year, where he was taught by Hendrikjan Renes, solo tubist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Jan also became a laureate of Axion Classics this year.
This young musician is also associated with numerous orchestras, both in the hafabra and in the symphonic world. In 2009 he completed his internship at the Flemish Radio Orchestra (now Brussels Philharmonic), where he also played in further productions as a freelancer. In 2009 he also played in the occasional brass band of the West German Radio Orchestra. In 2010 he played in the newly composed children's room opera "Orphelie" written by Axelle Kennes. In 2010 he auditioned for an internship at the Antwerp Philharmonic and won. He completed his internship with great distinction. In 2011, Jan also had the opportunity to play in several productions with the Royal Band of the Belgian Air Force.
At the end of the 2011 school year, Jan graduated with distinction from his conservatory training and can therefore call himself a Master of Music. That same year he started the brass quintet Cyprium V together with several other motivated professional musicians.
Since 2012, Jan has been a tuba player at the Royal Band of the Belgian Air Force, where he has also been a bass tuba soloist since 2016.
Since 2013 he has also started composing. Although Jan is self-taught, his compositions have already been picked up by music publisher BVT-music, and you can also find arrangements by him here.
Since 2015, Jan became a regular tuba player with the Ensemble de Cuivres de Belgique, a large brass ensemble consisting of soloists from the various professional orchestras in Belgium. This ensemble gives concerts both at home and abroad.
Since 2018, Jan was asked to become an artist for the Adams brand, so since that year you can hear him playing his favorite bass tuba: the Adams tuba, more specifically the Adams F tuba solo and the Adams C tuba 6/4.
In 2020, Jan joined forces with some other Adams artists, which is how ACT4 (Adams Custom Tuba Quartet) came onto the scene. He is accompanied by other fantastic musicians, Olivier Haas, Frederik Leroy and Frank Vantroyen. The ensemble would like to put the tuba and the euphonium in the spotlight through master classes and concerts.
In 2021, Jan also had the opportunity to expand his horizons on sousaphone in addition to the classical repertoire with the dynamic ensemble Mina's House Rats, where the repertoire mainly includes pop, jazz, ska and funk.
Conducting is also Jan's great passion. He studied conducting for 5 years, as a minor, at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Antwerp with Dirk De Caluwé and Steven Verhaert. His interest in conducting became so great that in 2013 he started a training course as a major in wind band conducting at the Lemmens Institute with Ivan Meylemans and Jan van der Roost. He completed this study with distinction in 2016.
Jan is currently also a practicing conductor with 3 orchestras: Royal Fanfare De Vrije Belgen from Sint-Martens Bodegem, the Alumni Harmony Orchestra in Leuven and Brass Band Zuid Limburg.
