From 30th May 1857 until 4th May 1867 the Canton of Mersch (with the Canton of Redange from Diekirch District) was in a separate fourth district, the District of Mersch.

Luxembourg consisted from 1843-2015 of three Districts (Luxembourg, Diekirch and Grevenmacher).
Today there are 12 (electoral) Cantons/Areas.
