Shropshire (County), England, UK
Also/previously known as: Salop (County), England, UK, Shropshire (County), England, UK
Shropshire has for centuries been known by two names - its current name, plus the abbreviation "Salop". Both are the result of mangling of the original Anglo-Saxon "Scrobbesbyrigscir" (equivalent to modern "Shrewsburyshire") by French-speaking Norman landowners.
The county has during the period of interest always been officially known as "Shropshire", with the exception of the period from 1st April 1974 to 1st April 1980, when "Salop" was used.
