1963: Founded as "Mid Hants Schools", by John Knight.
1973: Renamed as "Hampshire Youth Concert", at the suggestion of Decca, to coincide with a record release.
During this era the band competed in a mix of youth and adult competitions, with some over-19 members remaining to play in the adult format events. As a distinction became clearer between these two entities, the distinction between the youth band and the youth training band became somewhat blurred, with substantial overlap in personnel.
1976: Formal separation of the county-supported under-19 band from the over-19 band, which was launched as Hampshire Concert Brass, now known as Otterbourne Brass.
1991: Renamed "Hampshire County Youth".

I was 2nd trombone in John Knight's Mid Hants Youth Band in the mid '60s. One year we won the National Youth Brass Band Championship in St Pancras town hall, playing an Eric Ball March, the name of which escapes me. We then played it again the same night at the Royal Albert Hall, as guests of Black Dyke Mills band. None of the events listed corresponds with this recollection. Regards, Ian Barker

I was also a member of the Mid Hants Youth Band from 1965-1968, playing 1st Horn. I still have a photo taken 12 Oct 1968 of the Band on the stage of the RAH as noted by Ian Barker. I also have a commemorative ash tray (!!) made by the mother of one of the band's members. Peter Phillips
