Yorkshire Area

Qualifying contest for National Championship of Great Britain.

Although the Nationals qualifying contest format was inaugurated in 1945, in Yorkshire it took over from the already existing (from 1943) series of contests known as the 'Yorkshire Brass Band Championship' or 'Yorkshire Festival'. From 1945 until 1965 (and again for one year in 1970) it was known as the North Eastern Area contest.

In May 1965 it was announced that the backer of the Nationals contest would no longer back the area qualifying contests, as a result of which the 1966 areas were run autonomously by the area committees, sending qualifiers to the finals as usual. This contest reverted to its pre-1945 styling for this year. In 1967 the North Eastern Area contest was resurrected and used to provide Nationals qualifiers; however, the Yorkshire contest was retained and run in opposition to the official qualifying contest - results may be found under Yorkshire Brass Band Championship. From 1968, only a single contest was run, under Nationals auspices, using the Yorkshire name (barring the reversion of 1970).
