c1922 unknown newspaper clip found in family papers:
"Mr. Fred Hughes - Bandmaster and solo cornet in and around the Black Country, has been appointed conductor of the Willenhall Silver Prize Band, in succession to Mr. Herbert Fisher, retired. Mr. Hughes for 20 years held a similar position in the Princes End Prize band, and also conducted the Aston Old Silver Band for 12 years. For many years he was also principle cornet for the late Mr. James Roberts of the Willenhall Prize Band, and held the position of deputy conductor. He taught the Halesowen Temperance Band and made them prize-winners, also the Wellington St. George's Band, the latter having since won three years. Other bands who have had his assistance are the Short Heath, Wednesbury Borough, Newport (Mons), and Crewe Temperance.
He has been a very accomplished trumpet player for operatic societies, and has won 15 gold and silver medals over the heads of the cornet players in the Midlands. He, therefore, takes over Willenhall Silver Prize Band with an excellent record extending over 30 years, and will undoubtedly carry them to further success."
