Gilbert Vinter's ill-health (he died only 34 days later) forced him to retire from adjudicating duties mid-way through the contest; he was replaced for the remainder of the contest by Tom Atkinson.

The British Bandsman report of the contest in the Sept. 13th issue states: "Mr. Gilbert Vinter, the composer of the day's test piece was prevented from attending as the programme announced that he would, due to ill health. All will join in the expression of goodwill which Mr. Fearnley voiced in a telegram to Gilbert Vinter from Belle Vue." and " The adjudicators were Sir Vivian Dunn, and Mr John Carr. In the capacity of referee was Mr. Eric Ball. It was at extremely short notice that Eric Ball had been called upon to fill this important role." In the Bandsman only Dunn's and Carr's remarks were published.
