Prizes:
1st: £2,500 plus the British Open Challenge Trophy and the Belle Vue Challenge Cup.
2nd: £2,000 plus the Frank Parker Memorial Cup.
3rd: £1,500 plus the Harry Mortimer Trophy.
4th: £1,000 plus the Edrich Siebert Memorial Trophy.
5th: £500 plus the John Gladney Trophy.
6th: £400 plus the William Rimmer Trophy.
Due to the death of Diana Princess of Wales, the 1997 contest was moved to January 1998. Some bands were unable to compete due to the change of dates.
The Polypipe Rossington Band withdrew before the contest.
The Iles Medal was awarded to James Williams.
The Mortimer Medal was awarded to Gordon Evans.
The winning conductor, David King was awarded the Mortimer Maestro Trophy.
The Best Soloist, Ian Porthouse, Cornet, Yorkshire Building Society, won the Stanley Wainwright Memorial Trophy plus £100.
Points were only awarded to the top six placed bands.
No bands were relegated.
